Cyberphysical Reality: Exploring Complex Relief Mapping in Confined Public Spaces

Co-author | SSRN Electronic Journal

Although Augmented Reality (AR) claims to be the promising protagonist for persuasive interfaces, it remains mostly informativebased. The AR is traditionally mapped onto real-world flat surfaces as in the case of Mixed Reality (MR) and used with hand-held devices. However, complex relief mapping (thre-edimensional AR mapping onto physical 3D objects) remains unexplored in HCI. For achieving greater immersion, the AR mapping is traditionally performed using two-dimensional projections, which is subject to costly setups. In this study, we propose Cyberphysical Reality (CR) as a new AR modality, exploring complex AR relief mapping in confined public spaces. We contribute with the CR reaching the wider audience using gamified environments, persuading the audience to collect marine litter in both physical and virtual settings. Using two independent sample groups (N= 40) in outdoor settings we test the traditional AR and find that external light exposure does not affect the audience AR interaction. In second experiment, when mapping AR onto complex relief, using two independent sample groups (N= 80) we further compare the standalone AR against the AR mapped onto complex relief using a geodesic structure. Data inquiry used scales ranging from environmental perception, emotional bonding, user experience, and usability scales, including time perception, field observations, and participant feedback. We find that the CR as a public and confined space resulted in more arousing environment reported by the wider audience, changes their environmental perception, and cause an increase in their exploration time.

Manifesto! Now: Game design for revolutionary thinking

Co-author | Design Culture(s) Cumulus Conference

This paper presents recent work designing and testing a card game for manifesto writing, including a new edition that focuses on the “Future (s) of Europe” as well as a digital edition. The game began in 2019 with a “Tech Edition” and has since been tested in classrooms and grassroots organisations across Europe. Beyond the basic rules, each trial has brought about significant modifications: in terms of content, timing, number and type of cards permitted, and other aspects of gameplay. In our game the manifesto is conceived of as a revolutionary genre-a tool for activists in challenging and complex times. By developing a new set of “provocations” for our European edition, on themes like climate action, countering extremism, the need for unity, action against racism, and finding empowering uses of digitalisation, our aim is to help rebuild the commons and encourage consensus on the most difficult issues we face.

INTERAQUATICA - Designing Interactive Aquatic Experiences with Geodesic Domes In-the-Wild

Co-author | ACM International Conference on Interactive Media Experiences

While HCI remains vastly abundant in human- and land- centric applications, in this work we focus on exploring further the Human Computer Biosphere Interaction (HCBI) concept in aquatic settings. Based on the existing techniques for prototyping the geodesic domes, we design them as five marine megafauna species, for the on- and off- shore locations. We describe novel interaction concepts with and within such structures: (i) Turtle AR nesting, (ii) Bird XR watching, (iii) Dolphin acoustic swimming, (iv) Seal night scuba-diving, and (v) Whale projection mapping. We report the design of such interaquatic environments, focused at depicting the ongoing concerns with such marina megafauna species, discussing their feasibility, suggesting research, implementation and validation for all interaquatic domes, planned in our future work.

Fourth-Wave HCI Meets the 21st Century Manifesto

Co-author | HTTF Symposium

We take up Bødker's challenge to ‘identify’ a fourth wave HCI, building on the work of Blevis et al. and others to shore up a new vision that places ‘politics and values and ethics’ at the forefront without abandoning the strengths of previous waves. We insist that a fourth wave must push harder, beyond measured criticism for actual (e.g. institutional) change. We present two studies performed at CHI’19, where we used our MANIFESTO! game to: 1) take the temperature of colleagues on adopting an activist stance, 2) test manifesto writing as a key activity in pushing HCI forward into the fourth wave, and 3) test our game for subsequent iterations, and as a probe for inspiring new digital tools. With the enthusiastic response received to gameplay, facilitated in part through a novel method using tableau vivant, we argue for taking political activism from the margins into mainstream HCI.

Dissent by Design: A Manifesto for CHI Manifestos

Co-author | ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems

The past decade has seen a welcome rise in critical reflection in HCI. But the use of manifestos - not to promote but to provoke - is still rare in comparison to more established disciplines. Digital activism has given new life to the manifesto, and the manifesto may in turn give new life to CHI - prompting new ideas by temporarily liberating scholars from the confines of careful speech and rational argument. We present a manifesto for manifestos; a chance for the CHI community to question its status quo and dream of its possible futures using our purpose-built authoring tools.
